36x48" / 7/8" abstract canvas. This was my final work of 2019. It explores the technique of lettering. The concept is to recreate a chalk board like surface in acrylic and then use lettering to draw the viewer in. The work began by covering the canvas with graphite gray. I then marked the surface up with white chalk, smeared it into the canvas and sealed it using fixative. The written words took shape using a filbert brush dipped in titanium white. I retouched the larger letters with a mix of hanse yellow and cadium orange. As a final touch, using a DIY type setting kit, I added words in black ink to the filled in O characters and in yellow ink to black areas. The overall effect is emotionally jarring and multi-faceted. It screams at the viewer from afar and says even more when inspected up close. As to the message, it was pre COVID-19 rant to myself: Get out and find community. The work now hangs in my office as a reminder of days gone by and opportunities lost.
